Yesterday morning a Canadian military vessel sailed into Puget Sound. With my binoculars, I could actually see sailors standing on deck – very exciting.
Points to any retired U.S. Naval Commanders among my regular readers who might help us guess what this vessel might be.

Is this a competition? How many Navy Commanders are reading do you suppose?
Without looking I could have told you it was a frigate.
Using the hull number I can tell you it is HMCS Regina, a Halifax Class Frigate, with a crew off 225.

what fun, Pam! I wonder if you could hold your camera lens where your eye would be on the binocular or telescope and if the camera could zoom in and photograph what the eye sees…I love photography and have never thought to try this
my ex was in the navy, but I never paid attention to all those details. Military life is not for me, although I did like going to base and watching all the companies running or marching and calling out cadence… something strangely poetic about it with they rhythm and meter, the tone and the effort to making sense of something through language…ah, maybe a poem for later…

For Ellen: Calling it a frigate alone would have won the day, but I’m pretty impressed that we can even know exactly which frigate and how many crew are on board. Kudos!
For Lynne: Don’t know about combining camera and binocular lenses, but will give it a try. Never knew you were a navy wife … if a poem comes out of it, be sure to share.

What the heck is a frigate? And why is it heading south? San Diego naval base I presume?
